□ Name: Zoe Hange

□ Series: Attack on Titian
□ Canon point: Post chapter 51
□ History:  Here
□ Personality:
Surprisingly, when speaking of or seeing Hange within her canon, she is usually seen as part of the collective. Often, she is seen at her Commanders side, quiet, attentive, and by all means on sight the perfect assistant and solider. During meetings, her reports generally objective to the point of scientific, readily obeying the bounds inside the chain of command. One could easily picture her as a paper pusher that has never seen the battle lines. This is the kind of image the public may see when she is riding her horse, walking with the rest of the Senior staff, or attending semi public trials.

But this isn't the whole story. As Eren noticed, the Survey Corps is "Made up of weirdos". Hange is hardly the exception to the rule. If anything, she may be the most overtly erratic of the Senior Survey Corps. Hange is seen being enthused, if not overjoyed about the topic of Titians.Eren once made the mistake of asking her out of politeness about Titians. She asked if he really wanted to know, and when he agreed, she ended up talking all night, and could have gone on for longer. However, while it is often mistaken as a fetish or obsession of the Titians themselves, this is not the case. Rather, she possesses a lively curiosity and fascination on the topic, the science behind the Titian biology and how they function. She's had to take basic information that has been found out by the Survey Corps over the hundred years, and use whatever tools she's had at her disposal to find out more. She's opened Titians up, tortured them, deprived them of sunlight, recorded notes, tried to communicate with them, amongst other methods. While she does take safety precautions initially in her research (ensuring that Eren is in a dry well for his transformation experiment, pinning down Sonny and Bean with a series of straps and pikes) she tends to get very focused. So much, that she sometimes forget the matters of personal safety. Once, she nearly had her head bitten off; the other, she accidentally burned herself on still steaming shifter-Titan flesh when she tried to touch it. Her reactions can get physical when she is overwhelmingly overjoyed or happy at a new scientific discovery: she may drool, yell, or dance around in sheer happiness (though that could have also been a reaction to burning her hands).

Again, it is the scientific topic on the matter of discovery that makes her happy. When she is in the field, she shows no mercy for the Titians she fights. While she may make unconventional decisions on luring tactics on her own, she does not hesitate to kill them. While she may fuss over the little details she finds later on, during the fight, she stays focused, commanding with authority and decisive action, doing what she can to ensure her people will stay alive and unmaimed as best as possible. Sometimes, even the best tactics will not work, and people will die. She has to deal with that in the field and move on, or else more will die under her command. It is likely something that she's had to deal with for years, possibly since the fall of Wall Maria five years ago.

And yet, she does project seeming care free attitude. While other persons throughout the story may be utterly serious, Hange is casually snickering and quipping remarks about the situation, seeming to enjoy herself. She is often seen teasing and ribbing Levi without shame, and babbling at anyone who will listen about her discoveries. She'll wave off Eren as he goes to a trial that may end with his death with little more then a casual 'good luck', and not care in the least that she nearly got injured in the name of science. Seemingly, life is about fun, and she'll enjoy what she can out of it. After all, she may die on any mission, or any possible break of the wall. Life is made of the little things, and she'd rather not get caught up in the details. If she is going to die an early age, she would rather do it on her terms, then on any other. This is in part of how she keeps herself sane in her world, which take both focus and control.

Control and focus are two things Hange has in abundance; it is almost an irony, as she speaks and projects as someone seemingly carefree to her comrades and subordinates. She tends to use her self control into funneling in her killing the Titians, in pursuing the truth in science and in the political and military field. This may be the best for everyone, as from what little that has been seen, she has a bad temper, even rage under the careless facade. From what has been seen and spoken of, her level of rage could be as high as Eren Jaeger's; it is just better leashed. She has spoken of how she used to fight, before she realized how light a Titian's head was when she kicked it away. Later on in the story, we see Hange nearly throw Pastor Nick off the wall, demanding answers as to what was uncovered. It was only due to the fact that he would answer more dead then alive that she did not let him fall. It did not stop her from taking him along as a would be hostage and try to convince him to speak. Hange is many things, but stupid is not one of them. If the conventional methods of torture do not work, the less conventional might.

Her line of thought may tie in with her anger issues; it may not. In theory, it could have to do both with her world and culture, and with what she has had to deal with for more than five years. There is the frustration on dealing with an enemy that comes back, again and again with little respite in-between. There are the number of people that she has lost due to the Titians, with at least thirty percent lost on every Survey Corps mission. The fall of Wall Maria was hellish not only for the civilians, but for the military as well; as part of the Corps, she would have been expected to stay behind overwhelming odds, and ensure that people got out, if possible. There may have been situations where she was the only survivor of her squad, or the group she was meant to protect lost due to a number of factors she could not counteract. Being a survivor and a solider, she has had to deal with frustration, anger, and helplessness, even when she is armed and dangerous. Adding to the fact that she is one of the few that realizes the level of biological warfare is going on, and that there seems to be political conspiracies as well, could add to the hurt and frustration. Each of the Senior members of the Survey Corps seems to deal with it in their own way; they all have tried to emotionally distance themselves from the given situation, and act out accordingly. Levi has his seeming callous attitude; Erwin his using his people as if they're game pieces on the board. Hange devotes her energy into working towards freeing humanity with her ideas, theories, and research. This is not fool proof, as it does not deal with the underlying issues she possesses. However, it is the best that she can do, considering the circumstances. She can't go into the pain and the loss that she feels. If she does, it is too likely that she would fall apart, and that is not what she needs, nor what humanity needs.

This does not mean she has closed herself off to only science. She does care about people, and it shows. With Levi, she teases him lightly, respecting his choices enough to ask for permission to experiment with Eren. She doesn't take any seeming insult to Levi's name-calling, and overall, may be more relaxed, if not at ease with her comrade around. For example, with Pastor Nick, Hange appeared to be more at ease, playing with the crystal she found then hovering over the Pastor, only yelling at him in frustration when it became clear he would not tell them what he knew. With the other Senior officers, Erwin and Mike, it is less obvious, as they get less screen time. However, in what little we have seen with her and Mike, they are at ease with each other, and walk in time with each other (though that could be easily picked up from being in the military for so long, and not personal ease). When Eren is spooked by Mike's sniffing habit, Hange laughs it off and explains for Mike, letting him stay silent and watchful for them both. Erwin, there is a clear level of respect, between commander and subordinate: he listens, and more importantly remembers her theorized ideas, even when she dismissed them or forgot. He also trusted her, along with Levi and Mike, with the plan to capture the female-type Titian, while the rest of the Corps ran blind. She stayed silent, trusting her Commander with his plan and his foresight, knowing that it was possible that it would fail, wiping out the whole group. She serves the Corps and humanity willingly and with eyes wide open, using her wits in order to serve her Commander and her people to the best of her ability. When in command of her own squad, she does what she can in order to keep them as much out of danger as possible, thinking quickly and dealing with the situation as decisively as possible.

It is difficult to show that she cares; her words on the matter are not overt. It is only seen by her attitude and how she interacts with that person that one can pick up the little signs of how deep her trust is extended to that person. It is not easily nor casually offered. However, once the trust is extended, that person should expect her loyalty to the end.

Hange is someone that is full of flaws, a weapon of wits in a hundred year war with an enemies that eat humans out of seeming addiction, not need. But she will do whatever she can in order to ensure her life is spent wisely, and hopefully have a long lasting impact with her wisdom, and not her hate.

□ Age: As there is no official age for her, I'm going to go with the theory that she is in her mid-to-late twenties. Slightly younger then Levi, but old enough to have been seasoned five years ago, when Wall Maria fell.

□ Gender: Female

□ Appearance: Hange stands at 5"7, according to the official charts, and weighs at 132 pounds. By all appearances, the weight is due to muscle, and not body fat. Hange's body type is androgynous; it is only on close inspection of her upper body that she is in fact female. Her eyes are brown, often hidden by goggles or glasses. However, they are often expressive, as the rest of her face; she is usually seen with an enthused expression, depending on the topic in question. She has, however, been seen expressing anger, devastation, hate, joy, pain, fright and confusion throughout the canon. Sadness may or may have yet to be seen. Her nose is slightly hooked, and her mouth is wide; it can be safely assumed she has thin lips. She wears her dark brown hair in a messy ponytail, ending just past her shoulders, with her bangs framing either side of her face. She does not wash it often, just leaving her hair up and out of the way.

Hange has yet to be seen outside of her Survey Corps uniform. It consists of her 3DMG gear, the harness that overlaps the body in a series of straps and buckles from shoulders to feet, knee covering leather boots, light grey pants, brown jacket with Survey Corps emblem on the left breast and on the back. Usually during expeditions, she wears a dark green cloak with the Survey Corps emblem on the left side of the collar and back. All she adds to this is a long-sleeve, button down light yellow shirt, which may be made out of cotton. The straps may leave impressions on the skin after wearing them for hours or days on end. Of note: the glasses/goggles she wears has been seen pulled onto the forehead, but not off completely. From what can be theorized, it may be worn for better visibility in case of blood in the eyes, or as a mental restraint, rather then for medical purposes. She has demonstrated that she can in fact see close up to point out details on a map for a group. However, this may demonstrate instead that she is far, rather then near sighted.

□ Abilities/Powers:

Hange does not have any supernatural powers. According to the chart within the guide book, her battle skills are not at the top, being rated seven out of ten. However, other then her team work (which rated eight out of ten) she placed on top for wisdom, agility, and strategy. In further explanation:

Battle ability with 3D maneuver gear , which includes with the usage of her surrounding environment and the sword-blades the Survey Corps uses to fight

Biology: Has advanced understanding when it comes to Titans, their functions, and how they may compare to human beings. Does not make her into a combat medic of any kind; as far as we know, she is purely a scientist, able to point out weaknesses and exploit them, but without actual medical training.

Theorization: Has been known to be the scientific leader of the Survey Corps; as such, she uses a combination of logic, and investigative work to make a variety of theories, that applies to enemy movements, Titians themselves, and the motivation behind the attacks that have occurred upon humanity.

Tactics and Team leadership: Can coordinate groups of at least twenty people, assess the situation, and split them into effective teams, and attack a titan or groups of titans.

Rifles: Can be theorized that Hange has been trained in the usage of basic firearms, such as one shot rifles, and pistols.

Curiosity: Whatever she finds interesting, or a possible thing that may improve humanity's chances for survival, she has to find out whatever is behind it, how it works, and generally get her hands dirty in order to figure it out. Her health and cleanliness may take to the way side due to her research, which has been remarked upon by the author. But she will work from nothing, in order to get something.

□ First Person Sample:

[There's a hum on the other side of the line as the feed starts. After a moment, the caller's eyes open, giving a clear view. Or, as clear as a view through goggles as it can get. In the mirror, there is a young woman, her hair caught up in a messy ponytail. She's grinning as she idly toys with a screwdriver in one hand. She spins it, and tosses it up and down in her hand as she peers at the mirror. Then she nods, as if answering a question.]

So! Testing this chip function out...through the eyes, is it? Whose idea was that?

[She pulls off her goggles, giving the viewer a wider view as she squints at the mirror.]

Same as whoever made the chips, I guess. But, if I'm not just talking to myself, I have a question. Why a wall?

[Hange waits a few moments, before continuing.]

I've taken a look at it, since I got here. From what I've heard, this place has been peaceful for centuries, without any talk of invasions of any kind. So, why a wall?

[She leans forward, and her smile widens at her reflection.]

What is the basic function of a wall? Think about it.

[She offers another smile, as she pulls on her goggles. And with that, the feed ends.]

□ Third Person Sample:

It didn't rain here. She did not realize how much she would miss it, until it was gone. There was something wrong with this entire picture, really. Hange had felt as if this whole city, this situation was strangely askew. And the more she learned, the more she was unable to put the pieces together. It was all wrong. Why sex? Why a wall? Why trolleys? And why, why three of the senior staff of all people?

Levi, Erwin, and herself. In any other dangerous situation, she would be able to grin like a mad thing, and take on anything they encountered; here, she was not so sure. It was her body the city wanted, not her mind. She wasn't conventionally pretty, and she knew it. Or perhaps...they wanted to break her down? Ensure that she wouldn't be able to fight back, to be of use to anyone?

The thought made her smirk, even as she folded her arms under her chest. That was certainly possible. This didn't feel like random design at all. Take the three most likely to break through and ensure that Wall Maria would be taken back, and break them. Maybe they would be returned, someday, when their minds were filled with nothing but sex. What an ugly little thought that was.

Hange chuckled to herself, and pulled herself away from the wall she had been leaning on. Well, it wouldn't be easy to break any of them down. Levi had a stubborn streak miles wide, and Erwin would not fall. He wouldn't allow himself to break, even if it meant broken bones or lost limbs. That was the kind of leader that led the Corps, without a doubt. And she would be there to support her allies, even if it meant they did things that were....strange to her at least. She wasn't going to remark on the status between Captain and Commander.

With confidence, she started down the street, making her way to the library. Maybe she could find something useful, there, this time. Or, she might find something interesting on the way over, like the hardware store, or someone's story, unexpected and interesting. Considering the wealth of variety here, there had to be something. Even if she bumped into them blindly, there was something she could do here.

She refused to let herself dissolve into helplessness.
